Overall, I am very pleased with how well my unit has held up over the years and the simplicity to preparing meals and easily disposing of the collected grease in the drip tray. This is a kitchen gadget that has given me ZERO regrets since day one.
Preheating is vital, don't start cooking until the light goes out, or your cooking time will be unreliable. For lean cuts of meat, it is really important to cook it to the right temperature - use an instant-read meat thermometer (preferably Thermapen, but Taylor also has a useable one). Cook chicken breasts to 160, lean pork loin and tenderloin to 150 - maybe a little pink and juicy in the middle until they have rested for 3 minutes, but the outside has been sterlized by heat, so you will not get sick. Cooking goes fast - use a timer and do not walk away once you start cooking. Do not overcook, or the meat will be dry and tough, especially as you are not using extra fat to grill the food. I also like to brine lean meats like chicken breasts and pork loins in 3 pints of water with 3 tablespoons table salt and 3 tablespoons sugar for 1 hour - pat dry with paper towels before cooking. One inch thick pork loins cook on our grill to 150F in about 7 minutes using these methods. Consider flipping half way through the cooking, as the lower plate seems to cook a bit faster than the upper plate. Bacon gets de-fatted and stays flat - crispy in about 6 minutes. Panini are easy, they will brown and crisp in 3-5 minutes. Just be sure to butter the outside of the bread, like you would for a toasted sandwich maker.
Cleanup is easy thanks to the removable plates. I haven't needed the dishwasher. If I just pool a little water on the plates for a couple of minutes, all the residue wipes off with the supplied sponge and a little dish soap.
Overall this is a great little machine. Little is the operative word. You could get two decent sized New York strip loin steaks on here, 4 burgers if they are not too big, or a well-trimmed butterflied leg of lamb. However, it is really the right size for one or two adults - you need a bigger one if you are normally feeding more people. If you remember to be very careful not to overcook meats, and consider flipping them half way through grilling for even cooking and browning, I think you will be very happy with this grill.
I think this is a great gift for anyone living in an apartment. Parents, if you're sending your kids off to college and you want a way to encourage them to eat more healthily and cheaply, this grill seems like a real good nudge in that direction.
Update: A few more comments, a bit more negative than my original review. I still love the grill, but I have to note that clean up definitely needs to be done immediately. Otherwise, it gets really tough. Also, I've already put a minute scratch in the non-stick. And, while it cooks fish incredibly well, it seems to retain a fishy odor. Part of this may indicate a need to be especially diligent in cleaning not just the removable plates but the edges of the grill. I didn't notice splatter at first on those parts, but it definitely has had some splatter. This is a bit more awkward to clean up, especially since the exposed grill parts remain very hot for a long time. Still, overall, knowing what I know now, I would still happily make the purchase. Happy grilling!
The one thing that would improve this grill would be an on/off switch. I think I get why the original one didn't have a switch--the makers didn't want you washing it over a sink while it was still plugged in. But with removable plates, this is no longer a concern. You can probably get an on/off switch to plug the grill into pretty cheaply at a hardware store, which would eliminate the sparking that sometimes happens when you unplug it. Otherwise, very pleased with it!
